Fierro, J.; Bravo, M.; Castillo, M..
Sea level and currents in “Boca del Guafo” and Moraleda channel are studied using statististical and Fourier (harmonic) analyses. The data were collected using oceanographic instruments that covered a wide geographical area, from the northern most point of Moraleda channel to Darwin channel. The results of the harmonic analysis indicated that the area has a semidiurnal tide with a 12-minute phase shift between the ports of Melinka and Lagunas. This result shows that the tidal wave does not only propagate along the Moraleda channel, but at the same time enters the region through several transversal channels that connect the Pacific Ocean with the Moraleda channel. Along the main channel (Moraleda) no reverse current was recorded, which is an unusual...

Characterization of physical variables at La Escollera, a human-made coastal lagoon in Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
ABSTRACT Coastal lagoons are a focus of primary production and a refuge for biodiversity due to their relative confinement and low depth. La Escollera is a human-made coastal lagoon in El Rodadero, Santa Marta (Colombian Caribbean), excavated in the early 1980s to hold a marina and its fringes planted with mangroves. To generate a baseline of physical variables that contribute to the nderstanding of water circulation and its influence on ecosystem attributes, salinity, temperature, sea level and light penetration data are outinely obtained through electronic recorders and handheld sensors. Salinity and temperature data from January 2017 to February 2018 ollowed the seasonal pattern of the open sea in the Santa Marta area, alternating between lower...

Dispersion of deep-sea hydrothermal vent effluents and larvae by submesoscale and tidal currents ArchiMer
Vic, Clement; Gula, Jonathan; Roullet, Guillaume; Pradillon, Florence.
Deep-sea hydrothermal vents provide sources of geochemical materials that impact the global ocean heat and chemical budgets, and support complex biological communities. Vent effluents and larvae are dispersed and transported long distances by deep ocean currents, but these currents are largely undersampled and little is known about their variability. Submesoscale (0.1–10 km) currents are known to play an important role for the dispersion of biogeochemical materials in the ocean surface layer, but their impact for the dispersion in the deep ocean is unknown. Here, we use a series of nested regional oceanic numerical simulations with increasing resolution (from δx=6km to δx=0.75km) to investigate the structure and variability of highly-resolved deep currents...

Sitz, L.E..
This dissertation analyses the barotropic and baroclinic response of the Argentinean Continental Shelf to different forcing using a three-dimensional numerical ocean model. The study aims towards a systematical exploration of the physical processes that control the circulation. To facilitate the dynamical understanding of the results our experimental strategy was to start with a three dimensional barotropic model (constant density) that examines the influence of winds and tides, and to progress to a more complex case including density stratification (baroclinic model). It was found that the average annual circulation, forced only by the wind, shows a strong contrast between the northern and southern region of the study area. A detailed analysis...

Cambon, Gildas.
This thesis was written in the framework of a realistic modelisation for the study of the Iroise Sea. The first two parts deal with its digital implementation and validation based on observation. We then focus on the analysis of the main structures and physical processes operating in the Iroise Sea: first the Ouessant tidal front and the processes associated with the connexion of surface and bottom mixing layers, then the average eulerian residual circulation for which we tried to quantify the relative part of the different processes involved. We then mapped the different dynamic regimes involved: some cyclostrophic regimes can be observed around the islands and in shallow water areas, and a geostrophic regime clearly appears, at front level, especially in...

Mangrove sedimentary characteristics and implications for crab Ucides cordatus (Crustacea, Decapoda, Ucididae) distribution in an estuarine area of the Amazonian region Acta Amazonica
Gomes,José Diego; Abrunhosa,Fernando Araújo; Simith,Darlan de Jesus de Brito; Asp,Nils Edvin.
At the coastal zone sediments, water and organisms interact intensely. At equatorial tidal-dominated coast mangroves are abundant. These areas are well-known for their ecological importance. Considering the mangroves of Atlantic South America, the mangrove crab, Ucides cordatus has ecological and economic prominence. High densities of this crab are found on the Amazon coast. This study investigates the sediment distribution of the Bragança mangrove area (Amazon coast, Brazil) and its correlations with vegetation and mangrove crab distribution. Sediments of 47 sites, as well as crabs from sites with different sediment and vegetation, were sampled. Results show that surface sediment of the area is mainly composed by silt (59%), with 21% sand and 20% clay....

Tonini, M.H..
This dissertation analyses the oceanic circulation of the Norpatagonian Gulfs, a region of the Argentinean Sea that has long been recognized for the high productivity and biodiversity of the ecosystem. The study aims towards a systematic exploration of the physical processes that control the circulation using a high resolution three dimensional numerical model. To facilitate the dynamical understanding of the results our experimental strategy was to start with a constant density (barotropic) model forced by tides and winds, and to progress to a more complex case including density stratification generated by surface fluxes of heat and humidity. The main result that stems from the numerical experiments is that tidal forcing significantly contributes to the...

Michel, Charlotte.
The Baie de Somme is an infilling estuarine environment, controlled by intensive marine hydrodynamics forcing (megatidal tide and waves) and a small river flow. Morpho-sedimentary dynamics of this bay and sedimentary fluxes were studied at two spatial and temporal scales. I) At the scale of intertidal hydraulic dunes, studied during semi-diurnal and semi-lunar tidal cycles with neap tides (NT) and spring tides (ST). In this context, a strong forcing variability (winds, tide, waves) control sedimentary fluxes and morphodynamics evolutions of dunes (λ : 5-23 m ; H : 20-60 cm). These fluxes generally increase with tide and waves, inducing a net sediment transport to the east or west, according to the predominance of current (flood/ebb), which depends on the...

Oceanic Circulation in the Strait of Gibraltar revealed by AIS data Information ArchiMer
Le Goff, C; Mironov, As; Boussidi, B; Bordois, L; Dumas, F; Chapron, Bertrand.
Our understanding of ocean circulation to date still bears many unanswered questions. Despite the development of a variety of methods for observing upper ocean current velocity at different scales, our knowledge of this subject has yet to be significantly improved. Historically, the drift of vessels led to the discovery of the oceanic surface current. The Automatic Identification System (AIS), originally intended to avoid collision in maritime traffic, contains the necessary information to retrieve vessel drift due to the surface current. Thus, the AIS data can be processed to derive sea-surface current components for any region in which there is maritime traffic. A dedicated inversion scheme has recently been theoretically formulated and implemented. In...

Fierro, J.; Castillo, M.; Valenzuela, C..
During the research cruise Cimar-Fiordo 2, carried out in late 1996, sea level was recorded in three stations located in channels, Messier (Puerto Edén), Wide (Punta Beresford) and Concepción (Caleta Patria). The measurements were of short term, starting in October 20th and finishing in December 13th, 1996. The sea level in those stations, was analyzed in the time and frequency dominion, and some tide non harmonic values were calculated. Results showed that tides evident influence in sea level signal, with a clear mixt semidiurnal behavior, and a daily inequality between high and low waters. The highest tide range was observed in puerto Edén, showing the effect of the local orography configuration while the wave propagates into the channel, and...

The impact of tides on simulated landfast ice in a pan-Arctic ice-ocean model ArchiMer
Lemieux, Jean-francois; Lei, Ji; Dupont, Frederic; Roy, Francois; Losch, Martin; Lique, Camille; Laliberte, Frederic.
The impact of tides on the simulated landfast ice cover is investigated. Pan‐Arctic simulations are conducted with an ice‐ocean (CICE‐NEMO) model with a modified rheology and a grounding scheme. The reference experiment (without tides) indicates there is an overestimation of the extent of landfast ice in regions of strong tides such as the Gulf of Boothia, Prince Regent Inlet and Lancaster Sound. The addition of tides in the simulation clearly leads to a decrease of the extent of landfast ice in some tidally active regions. This numerical experiment with tides is more in line with observations of landfast ice in all the regions studied. Thermodynamics and changes in grounding cannot explain the lower landfast ice area when tidal forcing is included. We...

The tides and tidal circulation of Todos os Santos Bay, Northeast Brazil: a general characterization Anais da ABC (AABC)
LESSA,GUILHERME C.; DOMINGUEZ,JOSÉ M. L.; BITTENCOURT,ABÍLIO C.S.P.; BRICHTA,ARNO.
The Todos os Santos Bay, located on northeastern Brazil, is the second largest coastal bay in the country, after São Marcos Bay. The three main drainage basins convey an average of 120 m³/s of freshwater towards the bay, the majority of it, however, held by a dam in Paraguaçu River since 1985. The original average freshwater inflow was two orders of magnitude smaller than the estimated tidal discharge through the main bay entrance, and the oceanographic characteristics of the bay, as indicated by bay salinity measurements, are clearly marine. The tides are semi-diurnal, and are amplified up the bay by a factor of 1.5. Shallow water constituents become more important as the tide propagates along Paraguaçu Channel and Paraguaçu River, where they generate...

Three-dimensional numerical model study of the residual current in the South China Sea ArchiMer
Cai, Sq; Huang, Qz; Long, Xm.
A three-dimensional baroclinic shelf sea model is employed to simulate the tidal and non-tidal residual current in the South China Sea. The four most significant constituents, M-2, S-2, K-1 and O-1, are included in the experiments with tidal effect. At most stations, the computed harmonic constants agree well with the observed ones. The circulations of the South China Sea in summer (August) and winter (December) are mainly discussed. It is shown that the barotropic tidal residual current is too weak to affect the South China Sea circulation, whilst the contribution of the baroclinic tidal residual current to the South China Sea circulation would be important in the continental shelf sea areas, especially in the Gulf of Thailand and Gulf of Tonkin. In the...

Tidal dynamics of the Terminos Lagoon, Mexico: observations and 3D numerical modelling ArchiMer
Contreras Ruiz Esparza, Adolfo; Douillet, Pascal; Zavala-hidalgo, Jorge.
The tidal circulation patterns in the Terminos Lagoon were studied based on the analysis of 1 year of measurements and numerical simulations using a baroclinic 3D hydrodynamic model, the MARS3D. A gauging network was installed consisting of six self-recording pressure-temperature sensors, a tide gauge station and two current profilers, with pressure and temperature sensors moored in the main lagoon inlets. Model simulations were validated against current and sea level observations and were used to analyse the circulation patterns caused by the tidal forcing. The numerical model was forced with eight harmonic components, four diurnal (K (1), O (1), P (1), Q (1)) and four semi-diurnal (M (2), S (2), N (2), K (2)), extracted from the TPX0.7 database. The...

Tide analysis In The Red Sea; In Gizan and Port Sudan OceanDocs
Eltaib, Elfatih.
Tide gauge measurements recorded at two stations in the Red Sea, at Port Sudan from 1986 - 1994 and at Gizan for the period of 1992 - 1994 are used to analyze the sea level changes and tide along the east and west coast of the Red Sea, using the harmonic analysis (t tide). Meteorological parameters during the same period are used to study the response of the sea level and residual sea level to local and global forcing. The relation between sea level and forces are examined using the correlation and cross covariance analysis. The correlation and cross-covariance coe cients between sea level and sea level pressure at Port Sudan indicate that the sea level responds to atmospheric pressure as non-inverse barometer. The linear trend for the coastal area shows a...
